This year I decided to take french 3 independently. I was planning on doing it all year, however my plans have changed and I am going away for semester 2. I have been focusing on specific skills like reading, writing, speaking, and listening. This is everything I have done semester 1 for french.
Reading
Heartstopper
I have all four Heartstopper books in french, so i am working on reading those throughout the year. It is a series I have read many times in english, so I thought that would be a good book to read. I wanted to read actual french and just work through it instead of the lower level intro french books. A lot of it I don't understand, but i have figured out someways to still read it and learn at the same time. I started by using the dictionary to translate words, but then I realized that it just took too long, so now I use the english book and compare parts I don't understand and piece it together as I go. I have already read the first, and am now in the middle of the second. My plan was to finish all the books by the end of the year, however because I am only doing a semester of french, I will finish the others over the summer. In the last cell is my unorganized reading log and below is the two book recaps I wrote.
I also have 2 of the Harry Potter books in french, another series I love and know every well. My plan has been to read those with my mom, however figuring out when to do that has been hard. We are often to tired at night and the day it too busy, so we haven't ended up reading it very much. When we have been able to read it, my mom reads it out loud to me so that I can listen and sometimes follow along with her reading. The reading log is in the bottom cell.
I have been writing weekly, and then correcting it with my mentor (my grandma) when we meet. I wrote notes for the different verb tenses to use and words to remember. Below are the stories, pages I have written, and notes
During my weekly meeting with my mentor (grandma), we try to speak in mostly french with a little english mixed in to help me understand. She usually asks me questions in french and I try to answer in french, however I often just forget how to say things so I ask her. I have also been trying to talk to my mom in french, because I can and it is helpful. Below is a recording of a meeting with my mentor.
At the end of the semester I decided to do a project about the Cyclone that hit madagascar last year. I wrote most of it in english because I don't have the vocabulary to do it all in french, but I wrote a portion of it in french which my mom helped me correct. I have also been trying to listen to music in french, just because it is fun.
